Your latest song Beat Pe Booty (A Flying Jatt) is quite a rage...
Sachin-Jigar (composers) called me up and when I heard the song, I really loved its beats and sound. We recorded the track in around 40-45 minutes and I am loving the response that I have been getting.
How has your Bollywood journey been so far?
It’s been overwhelming , I never thought I would get so much love and adulation. In fact, success is yet to sink in.
Do you think you are getting typecast in Bollywood?
Post Baby Doll (Ragini MMS 2, 2014), many composers approached me with songs similar to Baby Doll, but I refused them as I didn’t want to be repetitive. Having said that, I cannot complain because I have songs of various genres to my credit. Chhil Gaye Naina (NH10, 2015), Da Da Dassa (Udta Punjab) and then, Beat Pe Booty. So, I am extremely happy. Also, we need to understand that people like the same kind of songs.
Is there a song sung by some other artiste that you wish you had sung?
Yes, Phir Le Aya Dil from Barfi!. I must have tried to sing that song 100 times, but could never get it right (The song has been sung by Rekha Bhardwaj).
On the personal front, you just got divorced…
I got married at a very early age (Kanika married NRI businessman Raj Chandok when she was only 18 and moved to London). Post marriage, I gave up singing for a long time. After divorce, I was shattered -- I even lost my self-confidence. But I had the support of my family and my Guru, who guided me at every juncture. They were the ones who encouraged me to revive my musical career.
You have been very strong...
I went through a lot of humiliation, but I always looked at the positive side of life. I had no option but to be tough, because I have three kids who are my responsibility. (Pauses)
Go on...
Even today, I go through a lot. There are days when I don’t wish to step out of the house, but I can’t afford to do that. Also, when I hear rumours about myself, I feel very sad. They pelt stones, talk rubbish and spread stories -- you are working your heart out, but instead of appreciating that, some people talk rubbish. However, I choose to ignore these things and focus on good work.
Any message for women facing similar crises in their lives?
Stand up for yourself. At times, even families may not support women, because of their false sense of dignity and honour. Please give your daughters a chance to move out and yes, support her in her decisions.
